I remember on one occasion we went to visit someone my parents knew out of Deerwood. Dad and I were sitting in the living room while Mom was visiting with the lady of the house and we were watching TV! Dad happened to be sitting by this huge plant that looked like a tobacco tree with large brown leaves? Anyway I saw him reach in his pocket. He pulled something out, looked around and dug a small hole in the dirt of this plant. He then dropped 3 large looking seeds in and smoothed the dirt as it looked before!
I asked him what that was.
He told me to keep my voice down, be quiet and not to worry about it!
I guess I did, but a month later I happened to be home when Mom got a phone call, and I was listening to the conversation.
The person on the other end of the line was asking Mom if her plant ever had babies?
Mom said not since she had had it!
This lady said, “Well mine has 3 little babies coming up” and she was all excited!!!
Mom asked her what they looked like as she had never seen them have babies? Mom was listening to the woman’s description, and she said, “THAT SOUNDS LIKE BEANS?”
I may have gotten a smile on my face, because Ma instantly saw it and asked me if Dad sat by that plant when we were there?
I said “NO!”
She said “YOU’RE LYING!”
Now I knew what Dad had put in the dirt! When Dad got home Ma gave him what for!
I asked him what those seeds were? Mom was right they were green beans! He had forgot them in his pocket after planting and he used the rest of them to plant in every place that had big house plants! The bank, the barbershop, friends’ and even Mom’s plants!
But Mom knew better!!!!
I always think of this when I see large potted house plants!
Dad liked helping others!
